Course Title: Geometry
Course Description: “The fundamental purpose of the course in Geometry is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. Important differences exist between this Geometry course and the historical approach taken in Geometry classes. For example, transformations are emphasized early in this course. Close attention should be paid to the introductory content for the Geometry conceptual category found in the high school CCSS. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.”
--Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
Big Ideas: We will study 9 (10 if there is enough time) units in this course:
1.Introducing Geometry
Course Website: www.owenmathclass.com
Classroom rules:
Consequences:
Grading Policy:
Quarter Grading:
Homework/Notes/Tracker………………………………..…….20%
Quizzes………………………………………………………………….30%
Tests…………………………………………………………………….50%
*Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student found cheating will receive a failing grade on that assignment and the student’s parents will be contacted. A second offense will result in disciplinary action.
Procedures:
***Subject to change.

Classroom rules:
- Respect others and their property
- Have all materials, and have them ready to use when the bell rings
- Be polite and helpful
- Don’t curse or swear
- No cheating*
Consequences:
- First offense: Warning
- Second offense: Short conference with student
- Third offense: Student will be sent to ISS
Grading Policy:
Quarter Grading:
Homework/Notes/Tracker………………………………..…….20%
Quizzes………………………………………………………………….30%
Tests…………………………………………………………………….50%
*Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student found cheating will receive a failing grade on that assignment and the student’s parents will be contacted. A second offense will result in disciplinary action.
Procedures:
- Doing assigned work
- Individual or group work will be assigned during every class meeting.
- If the work is assigned from a textbook the following must be included in the heading of the paper (which is to appear in the upper right-hand corner):
- Name
- Page number
- Problem numbers assigned
- If the work assigned is a worksheet, please ensure that your name is on the work before it is handed in.
- All work must be completed in pencil. I will not accept work that is not completed in pencil.
- You must show all necessary work. Problems without necessary work shown will be marked incorrect and I may ask you to redo those problems.
- Turning work in
- Work must be placed in the appropriate tray in the room.
- The last day I will accept unit assignments (including redo work) will be the last day of the week following a test on that unit.
- Example: If we were to take the unit one test on Wednesday, all unit one homework assignments would be due on Thursday (Friday if we happened to have school that Friday) by the end of the school day.
- Late work
- Completing work late puts you at a disadvantage in class. Math is a subject that relies on previously learned skills. I strongly encourage you to complete your work on time.
- Any late work will receive a failing grade.
- If you have an excused absence you will have five days to turn in the missing assignment. After five days the assignment will receive a failing grade.
- Quizzes
- Quizzes will be given from time to time.
- Do not expect to be notified of the time of a quiz.
- Quizzes can be retaken if you are not happy with your score. This opportunity is provided only if you show evidence of learning between the original quiz and the retake.
- Tests
- Prior to taking a test, a practice test will be provided to you. This practice test will not be graded and is to be used solely for you to determine what you need to work on before you take the test.
- All of the tests for a class must be completed, handed in, and graded before any test will be returned to a student.
- You may have the opportunity to take a second test if you are unhappy with the results of the first test. This opportunity will be provided at the discretion of the teacher with ample evidence provided by the student that additional work was completed to merit reassessment.
- All second tests must be completed outside of regular class time.
- Notes
- You are expected to take notes during this class. A format for taking notes will be provided.
- Your notes may be a part of your grade.
- If your attention is needed
- When the person in charge of the class stands at the front of the room do the following:
- Turn and face the person in charge
- Be ready for instruction
- When the person in charge of the class stands at the front of the room do the following:
- If you need to sharpen a pencil or if you need a new one
- I will have a few pencils; you are more than welcome to borrow one, but please do so at an appropriate time.
- Please do NOT sharpen your pencil while someone is speaking.
- If you would like to ask a question or respond to a question or thought
- You do not need to gain permission every time, but please be courteous to those around you.
- Do not interrupt someone who is speaking.
- Do not attempt to speak over someone else.
- Allow others an opportunity to respond if you have already done so.
- You are more than welcome to raise your hand and gain recognition in that manner if it makes you more comfortable.
- If you are absent
- Ask another student for the assignment.
- Copy any part of your notes that you missed from another student or from my example.
- Copy the tracker for that day from another student.
- If the absence is an excused absence, you will have five days to complete the missing work.
- Entering the classroom
- Enter the classroom.
- Go directly to your assigned seat.
- Complete the problem on the board.
- Leaving the classroom for any reason
- Obtain my permission to leave the classroom.
- If you are leaving the classroom without a staff member, take the pass.
- In-class participation
- I expect you to participate in class discussion at all times.
- At times I will ask for an indication that you understand the things we’ve discussed. We will discuss ways to indicate understanding in class.
- End-of-period class dismissal
- I will dismiss you at the end of class. Remain seated and working until I dismiss you.
- Do not pack up before I give you permission to.
- Food and Drink
- No food or drink will be allowed in the classroom.
- Electronic Devices
- Use of electronic devices is not allowed unless directed by the teacher.
